Is Central Air Right for You?
Tips for buying a central air conditioning system.
Do you:
- Have trouble sleeping when the temperature stays warm and humid?
- Get worried about intruders coming in because your windows are open?
- Have medical allergies due to hay fever and other airborne hazards carried by the summer winds?
- Have damage that is caused by highhumidity and moisture especially in your basement where it can sweat from the very high dewpoints in the air?
If any of these conditions are present you should consider getting central air conditioning.
Buying Hints
- Buy name brand units such as Goodman or Lennox that are well known and have a good reputation.
- Buy from a dealer who is established with a showroom. Can you go down and look at the unit? Buying from someone who isn't established as a business in Clarington may be inviting disaster. These people move and close up shop at any time.
- Finance the purchase even if you do not have the funds at present. This makes sense as you will get the best deal earlier in the season. Have it installed in plenty of time and you can enjoy it without sweating in the heat and paying a premium price.
- Compare warranties on units and go with minimum 5 years manufacturer's warranty, Lennox and Goodman both offer 10 years on many of their units. Expensive Air Conditioning repairs can be avoided by spending a few extra dollars on a better warranty.
- Remember inflation makes things more expensive in the future. A warranty on a unit today of 10 years can be very valuable in the 10th year because the cost to change the compressor out may be as high as 100% or more in tomorrow's dollars.
- Energy efficient is the last things to look for. Minimum rating is a 10 seer unit. The rating stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The higher the # the better.
For Canada with a cooling period of 30 - 60 days at the best, 10 seer is adequate however 11 or 12 seer units are better and will save you 5 - 10% more on annual energy costs. Going to buy a unit more efficient than 12 seer is a waste of money for our climate which dictates you spend more money on an efficient heating unit and look for medium efficiency unit for cooling. After all we're not Phoenix in climate yet!
